Interview with David Bunton of The Showdown (4/6/08)

Alex
:
Alright, you want to start us out by introducing yourself and telling us what you do

David:
yeah, im david bunton. i sing for the showdown.

Alex:
Now through the years, have you played for any other bands? and have you made any guest appearences?

David:
yeah, i played in a punk band that was same lineup...different drummer. called 2540 i played in a band called rapture of the meek for about 3 or 4 shows i have had an mxpx tribute band...me and trav had an acoustic comedy thing. haha, been jammin around for about 10 years i have done guest vocals on cd with relient k, chasing victory, last tuesday, destroy destroy destroy, and i, sleepwalker

Fredrik:
Seems like you have had your hands full over the past few years. Now being in The Showdown, what would you say is the number one goal of the band

David:
have fun, enjoy what we are doing, create something that make people listening to it feel something and of course write psycho heavy heavy metal

Alex:
Now as a Christian band, do you feel that there are restrictions or things you cannot do?

David:
as a christian i feel freedom i think thats what everyone should feel when they are a christian

Alex:
When you guys began as The Showdown, did you see yourselves getting as popular as you are today? Or did you not expect to make it big

David:
honestly no not at all.. we just were at a point where it was ok...we have to get real jobs/or finish school....or lets just do this record, have fun and tour we were mostly 23/24 when we did chorus
so we def got in the game late we have been playing and doing shows regionally for a while, but it was more of a hobbie. cornerstone, the festivals, playing shows in california...and people showing up..its still surreal sometimes.

Fredrik:
Do you remember the first show you played as The Showdown? What was it like? How many people showed up?

David:
it was at a vfw hall, at home...it was a pretty good size show...we have been playing shows at home since 98so we have alot of friends and get alot of killer support when we play home..the first couple shows we did before we did chorus.. were cornerstone nc, and we did some shows with misery index that was a fun time, cause we new we were getting ready to do a real record

Alex:
What has been your abosloute favorite show since then?

David:
the last cornerstone was very intense tours in generally with showbread are fun

Alex:
illinois, or florida?

David:
IL
we have so many emotional shows...

Alex:
how so?

David:
all the festivals stand out ozzfest was unreal. i dont know, its hard to explain. no matter whats going down, when we play its all good. this summer everything was going completely to crap, and i dont know how we made it. but we did...and especially when we were playing it was just like...yeah this is worth it. this is what we need to be doing

Alex:
Do you like to take the oppurtunity to witness to people on stage? Or is it something you would rather do after the show when people come and talk to you

David:
hanging out after is always killer i love that i dont really make speaches, im not good at it and its just not my game. i have said stuff before, im not against it at all...sometimes something will be on my mind, and i just have to get it off...i always say whats on my mind.

Alex:
thats good, do you ever feel like God has told you something in specific to say?

David:
yeah def, i dont really wanna recap it. as far as being a christian..im not affraid to admit im a christian to anyone

Alex:
There was quite the genre jump between A Chorus and Temptation. What can fans expect the next album to fall under?

David:
its going to be different than both albums...we are excited about it though. its going to be very thrash and very heavy we have a few ballads but they are dark

Alex:
Will it be along the lines of thrash synergy?

David:
haha, nah...thats the most legit record and band in the world though think, testament/pantera/exodus/alice in chains its kinda hammish when bands say stuff like that...but i dont write the music...and thats what it kinda sounds like to me.

Alex:
Who mainly writes the music?

David:
josh childers writes the music and lyrics has for 10 years now

Alex:
How do you think people will react to the new album?

David:
to be honest i could careless. if we cared, it would harsh the riff and we would write something bogus that wasnt us.
chorus and temptation are night and day and there was some controversy there...we know that we could have done chorus number 2 and prob sold more blah blah...but we wanted to do temptation....this record will be like night and day from temptation and its def what we wanna do and we are having so much fun with it...i think its the heaviest riffs we have ever written honestly.
and bands should do what they want, not pay attention to kids on the internet. the band is the bands, if they arent doing what they want whats the point. your a boy band

Alex:
hah yeah it seems like a lot of bands tend to do that today. Now outside of music, what kinds of hobbies do you enjoy

David:
i enjoy lifting weights, i go to school, and i hang with my boys and jam...the band was my hobby and now its more of a job..but i still love it. thats the best kinda job

Alex:
yeah it seems like it would be a top job

David:
totally.

Alex:
So in the best words you can possible think of, can you describe the new album for us?

David:
its really influenced by testament and exodus always pantera and at times on this one alice in chains. this one doesnt have any 80’s influence at all on the record

Alex:
do you have any of the songs roughly recorded? if so how did you guys react when you heard it

David:
its a pissed off record, so there really isnt any of that. well, we just finished the drums...like...10 minutes ago. we are really excited about it. im really stressed out right now...to the max...cause im an idiot and i screwed up our myspace..trying to put up a studio update. haha so lame.

Alex:
haha how so?

David:
tottally jacked the whole layout. im not the best at computers.

Fredrik:
how many tracks will there be on this one?

David:
we are recording 12...but prob just 10 on the record.

Alex:
will the other two be released any other time on different releases?

David:
hopefully at the same time..bonus tracks. stuff like that. if we love them all...we might just put them all on the record. last time we were only doing a 10 song..and it ended up being 12

Alex:
hah well thats always a good turnout. What would you say some of your favorite bands to tour with have been

David:
hatebreed, shadows fall, lamb of god. we love the showbread guyz, thats always cool!

Alex:
totally! now if you had the oppurtunity to tour with any 4 bands in the world, broken up or not who would they be in your opinion

David:
the descendents, mxpx, slick shoes, ben folds five i would never get tired of seeing those bands every night

Alex:
Big fan of punk music?

David:
yeah, i was into punk first, i mean...80’s metal when i was little....but i have always liked punk rock and no matter what the trend is i will always like punk

Alex:
what was the first CD you remember getting?

David:
aerosmith...get a grip was the first cd i ever bought. still a slammin cd.
aerosmith..worth it. ha, yeah right they are one of the most crucial bands. ever

Alex:
what is your favorite CD up to this day

David:
hard question dude.

Alex:
hah i get that from every person i interview

David:
life in general. By mxpx thats a staple..if you dont like that record. you suck. haha

Alex:
Haha MxPx is defnitley a fun band to listen to

Alex:
So how has the feedback been on the live songs you guys posted?

David:
pretty cool...everyone that knows our band and is familiar with that record is having fun with it..
i mean...its free, its live, we worked hard making it the best we could! hopefully people are into it...bands dont ussually give alot of free music away we just wanted to HOOK it up!

Alex:
definitely, i know i personally liked it quite a bit

David:
GAH that rules, thanks dude!!

Alex:
honestly i like it better than "A Chorus..."

David:
chorus sounds bad...

David:
the guy who mixed it ...is the guy that tracked it...and that doesnt really work..

Alex:
But in closing, are there any last words, comments youd like to make? Any prayer you would like readers to keep you and the band in?

David:
Stay heavy dude! for sure
